A Woman of Bath
Editors Note

This is a scholarly edition of A Description of Bath, by Mary Chandler intended for undergraduate students, as well as a general reader. The transcription has been taken from a facsimile copy of the Eighth Edition published in 1767 taken from Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO).
A semi-diplomatic approach has been adopted for this edition. As Pierazzo (2016, p.25) suggests, most edited editions are semi-diplomatic in some way. For this edition, many original features such as italics and contraction remain. The medial ‘S’ has been modernised as it can be jarring to the modern eye.
Original author's footnotes have been retained, though it is not guaranteed they were Chandler’s own. The explanatory notes ‘are restricted to make sense of the text’, Hunter (2007, p.97). Context regarding historical, political, social and literary references are highlighted.
